Heckmondwike Grammar School Big Band will be presenting their third BIG BAND BASH on Monday January 21st. Once again they share the stage with the Sid Alan Big Band from Morley in a packed programme of swing, jazz and pop – and once again the audience are invited to dance along to the big band sound – or just sit back and enjoy the music!
The Sid Alan Big Band have built up a loyal following through their appearances around the county and their regular monthly show at the Ackroyd Street Club in Morley – and their programme will feature popular numbers by the likes of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and Stan Kenton – with vocals from Andy Gollick.
The HGS Big Band have an illustrious recent history with eight consecutive appearances at the Marsden Jazz Festival, two appearances at Dewsbury Minster and dozens of other concerts around the county. Their programme will include Big Band classics as well as more contemporary numbers such as the Michael Bublé hits ‘Moondance’ and ‘Crazy little thing called love’, with new vocalist Ryan Gorman. Regular singer Jessica Trigg will also be interpreting several jazz classics. Both of these students (along with several more in the band) go to University this year, so this will be their final concert with the band.
In addition some of the numbers are complemented by some original dance routines choreographed by Year 12 performing arts students Helen Burgess and Shannon Thompson.
So, if you would like to start the new year dusting off your quicksteps or jives, contact the school on 01924 418308 or email office@heckgrammar.kirlees.sch.uk. Tickets are available at £4.00 each. Light refreshments will be available throughout the evening courtesy of the Kirkwood Hospice Support Group.
Later in the term, the school’s Music and Performing Arts department will be presenting J B Priestley’s thriller ‘An Inspector Calls’. Head of Department John Hunter said ‘Not only is this the first time for a decade we have performed a ‘straight’ play as opposed to a musical production or themed concert, we are using our newly re-furbished Dance / Drama Studio instead of the school hall – creating a more intimate and theatrical experience for both actors and audience’. The play includes an original musical score especially composed by Year 13 students Tom Ridley, Jessica Trigg and Scott Barnett.
The play is being performed on 12th & 13th March and tickets are £4.00.
