J B Priestley’s famous thriller ‘An Inspector Calls’ has been chosen by Heckmondwike Grammar School’s Music and Performing Arts Department as their major production this year, giving their instrumentalists a little breather after two very successful showcase concerts featuring the Concert Band, Orchestra and Big Band.
The film version of the popular play starred Alistair Sim in the lead role, and a powerful new National Theatre production directed by Stephen Daldry proved a huge hit in London during the 1990s.
The HGS production features an original dramatic score composed by A level Music students Tom Ridley, Jessica Trigg and Scott Barnett, who will join other players to form the small ‘pit’ orchestra. Jessica also plays the part of doomed factory girl Eva Smith – the catalyst for the whole show. The role of the Inspector is being played by Dominic Baldwin who has starred in several HGS productions, ‘cross dressing’ in ‘Sugar’ in 2006 and being immortalised as the ‘Tin Man’ in the 2007 production of ‘The Wiz’. Other leading cast members include Chris Beck, Tom Hardy, Stacey Todd, Niall Oddy, and Maud Halstead along with supporting cast.
The production ‘christens’ the schools newly refurbished Drama Suite, which provides the perfect intimate setting for the chilling story to unfold, and has been produced and directed by John Hunter and Ami Stott, who has recently joined the department as drama specialist.
Tickets are now available from the school priced £4.00 each – numbered seating. The performances are on Wednesday/Thursday 12th and 13th March. For further information and tickets contact the school Tel 01924 418308 or
