Instrumental/Voice Lessons 2008-09
Created: Mon 18th Aug 08 at 12:13:55

May I bring to your attention the availability of instrumental lessons within the music department at the current time. We have a number of instruments (some brand new) currently available for student loan particularly in the areas of brass and strings. Lessons are either shared or individual and are timetabled within the school day on a rotational basis. It is assumed that all instrumentalists (except beginners) will attend either Big Band, Concert Band or Orchestra; similarly all vocalists receiving lessons should attend the Choir when it is ‘in session’. There will in addition be a String group for all string players and Brass group for brass players. In recent years bands and choirs have toured Florida, Barcelona and Paris as well as frequent visits to London. All groups are regularly featured in performances both in school and out.

All lessons are heavily subsidised by the Governing Body. The school will guarantee to provide at least 33 lessons over the year (three terms) and you will be invoiced as appropriate at the beginning of each term. You will of course realise that the number of lessons given will vary each term. The autumn term is usually longer than 10 weeks and the summer term will be interrupted by examinations and excursions.

Pupils who received lessons during 2007-08 and wish to continue with them: a new form needs to be completed and submitted to ensure lessons continue in September (if not already done so).

Outstanding A-level Results for Heckmondwike Grammar School

Staff and students are celebrating the school's best ever A-level results. Our 200 upper sixth form students achieved 791 A-level and 216 AS –level passes, an average of 4.5 A-level passes per student.  Excluding General Studies, 85% of results were at grade C or better and 71% of these grades were either A or B. The average UCAS points score, at 407 is equivalent to just over 4 B grades, and is ten points higher than the school’s previous best ever performance.  The very good results placed the school in 61st place in the unofficial league table of the top 300 schools and colleges compiled by The Independent.

There were some excellent individual performances:

  • Forty-two students achieved 3 or more grade A passes;
  • Fifteen students achieved five or more grade A passes;
  • Timothy Dhir, Catherine Gordon, and Emma New achieved a remarkable 6 grade A passes
  • Tom Ridley’s 7 grade A passes is probably one of the strongest A-level performances in the country this year;
  • Tim Dhir and Niall Oddy were in the top five candidates in A-level General Studies;
  • Kiri Gabriella Anderson was one of the top five students in A-level Art;

All students achieved at least three passes enabling almost all year 13 students to start University courses in October, including a number of students who have won places at Oxford or Cambridge Colleges:
